Solar farms in Lenoir and Greene counties are up and operational now.

A 2.7 megawatt farm, built by Strata Solar of Chapel Hill in Kinston, has a capacity of 4,050 megawatts of electricity per hour, per year. It is the third solar farm in the county.

The Lenoir County farm began production about a month ago.

Area solar farm construction has created about 60 jobs with training, and some opportunities for longterm employment.

The emissions-free facility in Lenoir County is anticipated to offset approximately 2,175 tons of carbon dioxide.

The Snow Hill farm began construction in March and was recently completed.

Each of the two solar farms has a lifespan of 30-plus years and can power more than 313 homes in Lenoir and Greene counties.

Blair Schooff, Strata’s vice president of marketing and sales, said solar farms are environmentally safe and the panels do not get warm or emit excessive heat or by-products.
“Strata builds its farms with minimal impact on the environment,” she said. “We do not use cement or introduce permanent changes. There is no noise, traffic or pollution associated with the operation of a solar farm. The farmland can usually be brought back to its pre-solar state with no further complications.”
